Name: Ryner Lute
Series: The Legend of the Legendary Heroes
Timeline: Midway through episode 16 of the anime.
More specifically, the night of the day that he visits the Eris house. He has visited Arua and Kuku and promised Ferris that they will be leaving in the morning and that he'll carry the dango. He intends to visit Lucile's dojo, but has not gotten the chance to do so yet.
Canon Resource Links: Wikipedia
Also, because I can't find any good summaries anywhere, I've written up Ryner's involvement in the plot so far here, if you want to look.
Affiliation: Breeder, considering his dislike of senseless fighting. A rather ineffectual breeder, considering that he’ll rather disagree with the concept of breeding little critters for the sole purpose of having them fight, but still a breeder. If contests are discovered, though, he will probably switch to being a coordinator.
Personality: At first glance, Ryner is, in short, lazy and unmotivated. His favorite thing to do is sleep all day, and he dislikes doing... just about anything, really. Everything is too much of a pain for him to deal with. Granted, it's easy enough to get him to do what you want, especially via blackmail or violence, but that won't stop him from complaining about it. And he's a rather vocal complainer.
Past first glance... well, all of the above is still true. But there's more to him than just that, and there are reasons for all of it, most of which have to do with his eyes. Because of his Alpha Stigma, Ryner has hurt and killed many people, including some who he cared about. Therefore, he doesn't tend to get too close to all that many people anymore, because he knows that the possibility that he'll wind up hurting those he loves is all too real, and losing control is a fear he has to live with every day. This isn't to say that he doesn't care at all about the few people he does wind up getting close to, because he would sacrifice everything for their sake without a second thought if he had to, even his relationship with them. Those precious few are the most important thing in the world to him (even if they drive him up the wall sometimes and work him too hard for his liking).
Because of his Alpha Stigma, he has been branded a monster by almost everyone who has learned of it. And when nearly everyone in the world calls you a monster simply because of your eyes, much as you might hate it when they do, you tend to believe them, especially when their reasons aren't unfounded. He's not actively suicidal, per se, but because of his Alpha Stigma, he has very often questioned whether his life is worth living. (The only reason why the answer to that question is no longer 'definitely not' but instead 'there's a slight chance' is because of the few people who he has gotten close to and who have denied that he's a monster.) It plays a large part in why he's so unmotivated - when seemingly all you can do is hurt people, and when people hate you anyway despite any attempts to actually do something helpful, why do anything?
It's not like he wanted to be born with the Alpha Stigma, to be considered a monster. It's not like he wants to hurt people, especially his few friends. He's a kind person at heart, one who would share half his daily ration of food with a spider that decided to make a home in the same prison cell he had been (willingly) imprisoned in. He hates war - it's just people hurting other people, and for what? Land? Who cares who owns what land? His greatest wish is to live in a world where he could just sleep all day and not hurt anyone else, one where everyone else could live happily and not consider him a monster.
Now, this isn't to say that he won't fight at all, even when unavoidable. He'll fight when he has to, even if he tries to avoid it whenever possible (usually via running away or, though he hates the cries of "Monster!" that come with it, using his Alpha Stigma to intimidate the foe). But he prefers to use as harmless methods as possible to end the battle quickly and with no bloodshed. He hates seeing anyone get hurt, so he'll come to the defense of total strangers, if he can. He'll even protect the guy he was fighting thirty seconds ago from a third party if said third party intends to kill, that's how much he hates it when people die in front of him.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
The Alpha Stigma (because despite how powers are eaten by Arceus it is so intertwined with Ryner’s life that not talking about how it works would be leaving out something huge – it deserves its own section because it’s both a strength and a weakness rolled into one): One of several kinds of magical eyes that exist in the universe the story takes place in, the Alpha Stigma allows the bearer to easily and nearly instantly analyze and learn any magic he sees. In a world where each country has its own kind of magic and keeping how your own form of magic works secret from other countries is vital to national security, the Alpha Stigma allows the bearer to have a much greater skill set than other mages and learn it much faster… at a price.
See, Alpha Stigma bearers have a problem (to put it mildly). When they are pushed past the emotional breaking point of despair, they tend to… go insane. Their eyes activate, and they go out of control, indiscriminately killing anyone in their path until they themselves die. This gets them branded as monsters by the fearful public, and thus causes the public to try to get rid of an Alpha Stigma bearer once they find out, which causes the Alpha Stigma bearer great despair because people are attacking them just because of their eyes, which causes them to lose control… It’s a vicious cycle, and one that theoretically could be easily stopped (or at least lessened) by the public just leaving Alpha Stigma bearers alone in peace, but you try telling them that.
Ryner’s Alpha Stigma is, of course, different from others. Specifically, he’s gone past the point of complete insanity multiple times, but you can close his eyes and bring him back from it, no matter how far he’s gone. With most Alpha Stigma bearers, if you knock them out quickly as soon as their eyes just start to go out of control, you can save them, but once they’re past the point of no return, there’s no coming back. Why he happens to be special, Ryner doesn’t know.
Strengths: He’s considered the strongest mage in Roland, and for good reason. He’s naturally gifted in magic, even without his Alpha Stigma to help him, and can easily counter any spell thrown at him and toss back one of his own. His favored spell in general is one that accelerates his movement that he copied from a magic knight of Estabul, but his favored attack spell is Izuchi, thunder magic of Roland that doesn’t cause too much harm when used. (Yes, magic is eaten by Arceus, but oh well, it's important to note.) He’s also naturally skilled at hand to hand combat, and knows how to easily and non-lethally take down most opponents, even without use of his magic.
He’s also incredibly intelligent and observant, a genius that only comes every once in a while. If he had the motivation, he would have had incredible grades in school – in fact, he used to, a long time ago. If he finds a research project to put his mind to, he can do it, no matter what it is. He’s the one who researched hero relics and came up with a sound theory for how to create world peace using them from prison, after all.
Weaknesses: Ryner has close to zero motivation. His intelligence, skill in magic, skill in combat? Yeah, unless he’s prodded into it, he’s generally not going to do it, and he'll even fake stupidity in order to avoid anyone prodding him when he can get away with it. Not that it’s that hard to prod him into it – he’ll fight if confronted by an enemy who has no problem with killing him, he’ll do research into this or that if you poke him with something sharp and pointy – but he’s highly unlikely to do anything of purely his own volition, other than sleep. (There are some exceptions, but as a whole.)
On a side note to that, he’s somewhat submissive (despite his complaining) and easy to boss around by pulling out something sharp and pointy, or otherwise potentially painful. His lack of desire to kill could be considered a weakness by some, though your mileage may vary on that note – he certainly doesn’t think of it as one. The lack of value he places on his own life, also, could be considered a weakness.
Also, he comes from a society where magic is well-developed, but technology isn’t so much. So while he’ll catch on to various things quickly (being smart as he is and with his partner to poke him into learning), certain technology things will take a tiny bit of adjustment.

First Person Sample: [Video – takes place after he’s figured out how the Pokégear works]
[Well, someone seems rather flustered. Ryner is currently leaning up against a tree, still breathing heavily from running for his life. Despite his apparent exhaustion, however, he still manages to have enough energy to yell at his Pokégear.]
What the heck is up with the wildlife around here?! I can’t go five steps walking through the really tall grass that's almost everywhere without being attacked by a bird or a mouse or a flying plant! And it's not like I've been trying to disturb them or anything, but they keep rushing at me for no reason!
[He then thinks he turns it off here. Unfortunately, his finger slipped and he didn't, but. Oh well, he's not perfect.
There is also a Cleffa on his head, who has been clinging as tightly as she possibly can to his hair while he’s been running. Now that he’s stopped, however, she peers down to his face and starts chattering about something. “Cleffa clef cleffa fa cleffa!” She’s trying to tell him that he’s supposed to let her fight the wild Pokémon that attack and protect him, but he doesn’t get it.
Instead, he slumps down to sit on the ground, now with his back leaning against the tree.] This really sucks. At this point, I'd rather be escorting that stupid king. At least then I’d know what I’d gotten myself into...
[He looks around once or twice, since he's just noticed that he's suddenly not being assaulted now that he's sitting under this tree, and then peers upward at the Cleffa still on his head.] Hey, are any of those birds or anything going to attack now that I'm out of the grass?
["Cleffa." She climbs down off his head and shakes to indicate that no, she doesn't think they're going to, but that doesn't mean...]
Ah, is that so. [And he lays down and curls up on the ground.] Well, in that case, I'll just see about getting some sleep, figure out what to do about this later. Good night…
[“Cleffa…” And his Cleffa just stares at him, unsure what to make of the fact that he’s already snoring softly. Despite, you know, how it's the middle of the afternoon.]
Third Person Sample: “Hold still a second,” Ryner said, spray bottle thing that the guide book called a Potion in hand. To his benefit, his Cleffa (well, the Cleffa that had appeared when he had tossed that ball thing, and she kept following him, so he guessed she was supposed to be his partner for the moment or something) listened, and he was able to spray the contents on the large bruise on her forehead without much fuss. He watched in amazement as the injury she’d sustained defending him from that Pidgey or whatever it was called simply vanished before his eyes, and within a few seconds, the little pink critter had cheerfully leapt to her feet and was acting as though she had never been so critically injured.
Honestly, it was amazing. Wherever this was, he may not have been able to use magic, but this medicine was like nothing that existed back in Roland. Or maybe these creatures just reacted differently to medicine than humans did, but.
The Cleffa twirled happily around, and Ryner leaned backward. “Glad you’re feeling better,” he said passively. “Just don’t go doing that again, okay? Really, you shouldn’t risk your own well being for my sake.”
The next thing he knew, he was being punched in the face by the little pink critter. She was small enough that she really only managed to get the side of his nose, but he was surprised enough that, with a yelp, he wound up falling backward onto the grass. After a moment, he recovered, clutching his now-hurting nose. “Hey! What was that for?!”
“Cleffa clef clef cleffa fa clef cleffa!!” And there she went, chattering on about something again. It was obvious that she understood what he was saying, but he couldn’t catch a word of her speech. It didn’t help that she seemed to only be able to say her name. All he could tell was that she seemed angry about something.
Was it something he had said? She’d been perfectly happy until he had… maybe it was something he had said.
“Ah… um… is it because I said that you shouldn’t risk yourself for me or something?”
The Cleffa nodded with a huff. “Fa cleffa clef cleffa.”
“You want to protect someone you’ve only just met and have no reason to care about that much?” And a monster, of all things, to boot, though he didn’t mention that part. Just because he knew it to be the truth didn't mean he had to acknowledge it aloud at every opportunity.
Another nod.
After a moment to let this sink in, he sighed. “…What a pain.”
