tearsofademon: (call me a hopeless romantic)

☆6.8☆ [Action]

[Forward dated to around midnight]

Ryner let loose a loud yawn as he stretched back on the bench, though not so huge a stretch as to disturb the light grey egg on his lap, wrapped in the grey robe he had found in his bag the day he had found himself here in Johto. “This is so annoying… Rose, is this really that important to you?”

“Clef!” Rose replied with a cheerful grin as she bit blissfully into her stick of dango.

And that only earned a sigh from Ryner. Honestly, he had to stop letting her listen in when he was looking through the latest news on the Pokégear network. When she had heard that the new year was coming up and that other people were celebrating it, she had insisted on sitting outside until midnight to greet it. Ryner saw little point to it – it was just another year, so it wasn’t like there was all that much to celebrate, and little point to what little there was to celebrate when he’d barely known anyone here for two months – but he didn’t trust himself to hold back enough against her that she wouldn’t get hurt if he defended himself, making it better to just go with it, rather than get himself beaten up.

Didn’t make it any less annoying, though.

“Cleffa clef?” From the way she was indicating toward the dango, Ryner figured Rose was probably asking whether he was going to have some.

“Mmm? Ah, I’m not really all that hungry. You can have –” And he suddenly winced as Rose grabbed his finger and started bending it in a direction it wasn’t supposed to go in. “A-All right, fine, I’ll have some, geeze.” Apparently that was the right answer, considering his finger’s release, and reluctantly, he picked up a stick of it and started eating. It wasn’t like he hated dango or anything, he really just wasn’t hungry…

And so they sat, eating dango together, on the bench. It was just the two of them and the egg – his other partners hadn’t wanted to come, so they had stayed behind in the room in the inn.

The clock on the Pokégear ticked away, and soon enough, midnight was mere seconds away. Rose stared at the clock with excitement, watching time tick away.

5… 4… 3… 2… 1…

And it was a new year.

“Cleffa! Cleffa!”

“Well, there you have it,” Ryner said with a bored expression. “Happy New Year, and all that. Now, can we please go back ins— huh?”

And both of their gazes turned to the egg in Ryner’s lap, for it had started to shine.

“Erm, is… this supposed to happen?” He asked this despite having seen others’ eggs hatch on the Pokégear network when looking through, and knowing that the answer was probably yes.

“Cleffa…” It was hard to tell what Rose’s answer was supposed to be, with how entranced she was by the egg’s glow.

And then… poof.

Ryner was left speechless. There were several reasons for this. First, despite how he’d seen that this particular species had hatched from others’ eggs – it was called Absol, he recalled hearing – he was still surprised that such a large creature could emerge from such a relatively small egg. Sure, they could grow to be this large in theory, but something this big could hardly fit inside the egg. And yet here it looked almost full grown!

Second, despite what he’d seen these past couple months, he still found it hard to believe that sitting in front of him was a cat-like beast with a scythe on its head, that had hatched from an egg. This was not quite along the same lines as the horse that had been on fire, but still.

And third… he had the oddest sense of déjà vu. He dismissed it quickly, of course – they didn’t exist back in Roland, so how could he have ever met one before? But that didn’t stop him from having it in the first place.

Therefore, it was the Absol which made the first move. It stared straight into Ryner’s eyes – an action that always tended to unnerve him a little, no matter who did it – and tilted its head. “Sol?”

Ryner looked away and rubbed the back of his head. “Ah, well, uh… Welcome to the world, I guess…”

“Cleffa cleffa clef cleffa fa fa cleffa cleffa cleffa!” And there went Rose, babbling on and on again. Probably her own greeting that was far more enthusiastic, considering her cheerful expression, but.

While she did that, Ryner took the time to figure out just what to say, and when she was done, he continued, “So, uh… yeah. Seeing as you’re our new partner and all, unless you don’t want to stick around, and I’m not going to force you if you don’t wa—Rose please let go of my ear it hurts!—well, welcome. Um, I should probably give you a nickname, shouldn’t I – the others have them, so it would be unfair to call her Rose and you by your species…”

He slowly reached out his hand, and the Absol sniffed it before rubbing his head against it happily. His fur was rather soft to the touch, and Ryner found himself actively petting the beast’s head as he thought over what to call him. He’d never been good at thinking up names – when he made up names for spells, they usually were spur of the moment and not thought through very well, and he had no chance at naming living beings. Rose was a fluke, Gail had been named by Tatl, Elfy and Pino were just spur of the moment names that essentially strung syllables together at random and sounded decent…

Suddenly, a name came to him. Something he’d seen in a book once – he couldn’t tell you which one, or what the context had been, but it had been there somewhere, probably.

“What do you think of the name Jehra?”

“Absol.” From the way he rubbed up against him, Ryner figured that it was acceptable. Rose’s cheerful smile made it clear she approved as well.

And Ryner smiled too, a little.

But then he yawned. “Well, I don’t know about you two, but I’m sleepy tonight, and it’s cold out here… Let’s go inside.”

“Cleffa.”

“I’m sleepy tonight too, then.”

[End prose.]

[On the off chance that someone happens to be up past midnight in the Goldenrod inn’s lounge or hallways or something and wants to stop and chat with him and his new Absol companion on the way back to their room, feel free. Otherwise, an actual network post will probably come tomorrow night…]
