You know, there's this thing that's been bugging me for a while.

[Ryner's sitting at a desk, an open notebook and a couple of open books in front of him. Looks like someone's been doing something other than sleeping.]

In the Pokedex, it lists each kind of Pokemon and gives it a species classification, right? Like how Clefairy is the Fairy Pokemon, or Absol is the Disaster Pokemon, or Joltik is the Attaching Pokemon. And I mean, most of them are fine.

But then you've got Noctowl, the Owl Pokemon. And, well, I know what an Owl is, but they don't exist in this world, right? There aren't any normal animals here, only Pokemon and people. So why would they classify it as an Owl if they shouldn't know what an Owl is?

And okay, sure, owl is in Noctowl's name, but something like Buneary, the Rabbit Pokemon, or Cyndaquil, the Fire Mouse Pokemon. How do you explain those?


[Also, in the background, a Buneary might be seen rummaging through Ryner's bag while a shiny Togetic and a Munna look on, but that's probably not important...]

Right? Just when you think you've found a reason for one thing, five hundred discrepancies pop up. It's a pain in the ass.

It wouldn't be so bad if there just wasn't as much to take in.

Yeah. You get used to a lot of it after a while, but then there are things like this.

Wouldn't that be easy. Unfortunately, I've got a slavedriver forcing me to do as much research as I can, so it's hard not to.

Why are you doing research?

To find out as much as we can about this world we're in.

[and maybe with the eventual goal of finding legendaries, but that's unlikely to actually happen...]

...Perhaps this world had normal owls before Pokémon became so widespread.

[Which becomes terrifying if he thinks too hard about it.]

Maybe, but then the question becomes, what happened to them? You'd think they'd have records of them somewhere, or at least stories.

There must have been. But how long would it have taken before someone saw a text mention owls, thought of it as a mistake and changed it to Noctowls instead?

I guess that's possible.

...There is also the possibility that any preexisting reference to normal animals was deliberately suppressed, though I cannot see why that would be the case.

...That's a very valid question. I hadn't even given that much thought.

I wonder if they had those animals long ago.

That's possible, I guess. Doesn't say where they would have went, in that case, but it's one explanation.

Mm, also valid. This world is quite odd... What if a visitor like us named them for the citizens here, long ago? I doubt it means much to them.

Maybe, though in all my research I haven't found a single reference to other outsiders like us. That weren't Pokemon that are supposedly from space, anyway.

Yeah. A couple of people are suggesting that they could have had them but they disappeared a while ago, but you'd think there'd be records if that was the case.

Or if they do exist, but only in certain isolated areas, yes.

[Ryner idly flips through one of the open books.]

Even so, with how much research we've done, you'd think there'd be something.

Sometimes I really wonder if there's simply something wrong with this world, to cause it to be so illogical...
