[Begin prose.]

It’s one of those dreams tonight, then.

One of those dreams that he hates.

One of those nightmares which he despises the most in all the world.

People die. But none of that matters to you.

One of those nightmares where he has to hear a memory of that voice again. A memory of the cruel, overbearing voice that echoes whenever his Alpha Stigma goes berserk.

“You’re wrong!” Ryner tries to scream, but he can’t make a sound, drowning in the dream’s replication of his eyes’ chaotic energy being unleashed.

I’m not wrong. Somehow, the Alpha Stigma still hears him anyway, and even laughs at him, laughs at his pathetic, feeble attempts to stop the inevitable.

“Shut up! You’re wrong!!”

But no matter how much he struggles, he’s still washed away in the currents, drowning in the flood of uncontrollable power and despair unleashed from his cursed eyes.

And he sees people.

All of the people he’s met during his life – those he’s met in the various countries of Menoris, those he’s met while in Johto. Toale. Tatl. The prison guard, with his wife and daughter. Cobra Commander. Milk and her subordinates. Judai. Arua and Kuku. The girl who he ran into in the inn when the lights went out, whose Totodile went mad and bit her. Pia, Peria, Germer, Zohra, Biore, Tahile, Tony, Fahle. The girl he had been talking to just the other day about the dragon, bird, whatever it was. Kiefer. The people who had purchased Rose's eggs. So many others.

A single glance, and every last one shatters into crimson-stained shards of glass.

It doesn’t matter.

“Stop it!!”

He sees Mammon standing there, looking at him as she usually does whenever they talk, telling him off as usual for being such a pushover. Within seconds, she shatters.

Out of the corner of his eye, he sees people – a man with golden hair, a woman with long, black hair. Before he can even try to identify who they are, they, too, shatter.

There’s Fuji, with his typical whimsical smile. He shatters as well, a short memory drifting by as it happens. What he’d said in their conversation that night.

‘Fatalist. If you say they’ll happen, they probably will.’ ‘I think if you say it wouldn’t happen, you’d have a better chance.’

“I… I won’t let this happen!” He struggles even harder, inspired by that memory. He’d said he’d consider the other’s advice – might as well try now.

Fool. The Alpha Stigma’s voice simply laughs at him again. Don’t fight it. You desire it. The destruction of everything. Nothing matters.

“Shut up!!”

‘Fairy!’ Now he sees Rose, smiling up at him with her usual cheerful, innocent smile. Jehra stands behind her, looking up with a concerned expression, as though he knows disaster’s about to strike but is more worried about his papa than his own safety. Gail, Elfy, Pino, Ren, Aran, Rey, Jiji, Kaile, they’re all standing there as well, looking up at him.

“Rose! Everyone!” Ryner struggles to reach out to his Pokémon partners, hoping to get to them before the Alpha Stigma can do so. But regardless, they shatter as well.

“No…” He wavers slightly at the sight, his heart not wanting to accept that that just happened, his ears trying to ignore the Alpha Stigma laughing at his weakness again.

‘Ryner.’

And as he turns around to answer those two familiar voices, his eyes widen and he struggles even harder, reaching out again, desperate to at least save his two best friends, even if he failed to protect everyone else.

“Sion!! Ferris!!”

…But in the end, they, too, shatter into crimson-stained shards of glass, the same detestable crimson as the pentacles floating in his cursed eyes.

Part of his mind screams in anguish as their shards wash over him, still desperately not wanting his Alpha Stigma to win, but most of the fight has left him at this point, now that all those who are important to him have been destroyed, and it's all his fault.

But then, he's always known this, hasn't he? A monster like him can't reach out to anyone. Can't save anyone.

Everything. Yours to toy with. Release it. Open up. Kill. Everything. Until everything before your eyes disappears!

His eyes begin to tear up, with grief, with fear of what he knows is coming next. “Why…” he murmurs, before letting loose one more anguished, frustrated cry. “Why is it always like this?!”

And as he himself begins to dissolve into nothing, his ears are filled with laughter. Mad laughter, all of which is coming from his own mouth.

"GAAAAAAAHH!"

With a scream, Ryner sat up in bed. It was only after a few deep breaths to calm himself down that he confirmed his surroundings - the room in the Violet Inn that he had been staying in.

"...Just a nightmare," he muttered in order to confirm it to himself. It had just been a nightmare. Sure, he hadn't had one this bad in a long time, but it wasn't like this was a new thing. It sucked that he'd had it, but there was really no need to worry too much.

"Fairy?" And it appeared as though he had woken Rose up. Or maybe she'd never been asleep in the first place. With her, he'd believe either, really - after the time she'd gotten sick from pushing herself too hard, they'd reached an agreement on a reasonable bedtime (later than he would have liked, but then, he would sleep all the time if only anyone would actually let him), but he still somehow doubted that she actually slept.

He gave Rose a scratch behind the ears. "I'm fine, Rose. It was just a nightmare, nothing to worry about. Sorry for waking you... mm?"

This is about when he realized that the room should have been darker than it was, for this time of night. Turning to find the unknown light source, he sees...

A being made of shadow, holding a candle that looked sentient. Both of them were obviously Pokémon, but not like any kinds he'd seen before.

Well.

Okay then. He'd seen weirder. At least a sentient candle being on fire made some degree of sense.

"Clefairy fairy clef clef ry clefairy clefa~~~airy clef clefairy fairy clef!" Rose started chattering on about something - probably an explanation of what these two guests were doing here. (You missed it, dear partner! There was this hu~~~uge flash of light, and then suddenly they were there! They don't know how they got here either!) Not that he could even start to get the gist of her meaning when she got like this, but oh well.

"Twi..." the candle murmured quietly, seemingly at a loss as to what to do.

'Please excuse us. We seem to be lost.' The shadow, however, seemed to actually speak.

"You can talk?"

'Telepathy.'

"I see."

After a large yawn, Ryner continued, "Well, I don't mind if you stick around, while you figure out where you're going. There's plenty of room, after all -"

And then he froze.

Because it was at that moment he realized - he could see it. The flow of energy of the world, which one manipulates in order to create the effects known on the Menoris continent as magic. He hadn't been able to see it ever since he had woken up in Johto, but now it was there.

Which meant...

Well, no, he didn't need to confirm it to know. Now he wondered how he had missed that his Alpha Stigma wasn't sealed anymore.

"...ah, is that why."

He brought his hand to his face, in an instinctive attempt to hide his eyes, and tried not to let his expression betray the wave of sadness that washed over him.

Of course it would be back, he thought as he collapsed backward into a lying down position.

Why wouldn't it?

He was a fool for ever having hoped, even for an instant, that he would never have to deal with it again in the first place.

He knew too well. A monster like him can't have anything. The best thing to do would be to run away by himself, somewhere where he wouldn't be able to hurt anyone, no matter what happened.

"Fairy?" And now Rose had climbed closer, obviously concerned. Did her dear partner have a sudden headache? What was wrong?

...Well, it wasn't as though anyone knew about it, here. If he ran away, that would just confirm to Rose and the others that something was wrong. Knowing them, they'd probably follow him, wouldn't they. And then he'd have to explain things to them, and he wasn't sure how they would take it. ...Well, he knew Rose would hit him as usual, but aside from that.

Yes. They were innocent in all of this. Maybe... Maybe it was better to keep them innocent until there was no other choice?

"...Hey, Rose," Ryner said, turning onto his side so that he could move his arm without anyone being able to look at his eyes. "When everyone's woken up, this afternoon... I think I might be able to show you some real magic, now. Sound good to you?"

"Clefairy?!" She sounded excited.

"Yes, really."

"Fairy!!" And she hugged his arm in excitement. ...A little too hard, actually. Maybe she'd caught on to his sadness after all, despite his efforts. She was too good at that.

[Today's video feed from Route 36 is being brought to you by Aran the Paras, who is sitting on a low branch of a nearby tree.]

So basically, magic is really just rearranging the flow of energy in the world in certain ways, in order to produce different phenomena. Like this...

[And he draws a pattern in the air. Unlike the last time he tried, however, his fingers leave behind visible trails, creating a glowing pattern in the air, kind of like a magic circle.]

What I seek is lightning... IZUCHI!

[And this time, something happens - a large bolt of lightning comes forth from the pattern of light, striking a conveniently placed boulder a short distance away.

"Clefairy!!" Rose applauds while jumping up and down excitedly. That was so amazing, dear partner!!

(Incidentally, there is a Darkrai and a Litwick standing a short distance behind them, who are also both applauding, impressed.)]

Heh... That one's not really all that difficult, but, well, I'm glad you liked it, anyway.

[Then Rose steps forward and -

"Clefairy clef clefair... Clefairy!"

- uses Magical Leaf on that same boulder. She then turns back to Ryner and, with a "Clefairy fairy!", asks if he can do something like that too, since he can shoot lightning and taught her Thunderbolt.]

Mmm? Can I do something like that? Ah, well, I don't know any spells like that, but I can see if I can make something, anyway. Let's see... It'd probably be Estabul-style, the way you do it...

[He draws another pattern in the air, this one like ribbons that circle around him.]

I offer up this contract, um, how about, to call upon a tornado of leaves!

[He's not very good at naming spells. (Or Pokémon, really.) But the basic point is there, and he's surrounded briefly by several glowing ellipsoid-like shapes, kind of like leaves, which he directs to twirl upward before colliding a distance above his head and explode into a sparkling firework.

It's not quite Magical Leaf, but Rose seems impressed, jumping up and down and chattering about how awesome that was.

One small thing of note, though... were his eyes glowing red when he casted that second spell?]
