“So that’s what’s going on,” Ryner murmured as the message from Professor Oak ended. But he wasn’t really relieved. Actually, this just raised more questions.

Such as, why anyone would want to handle that many Shedinja with an ability like that in the first place – that would really suck, with that kind of risk involved. Or, slightly more worrisome, what the Professor had meant. While naturally caused Shedinja will not have this ability… Did that imply that these troublemaking ones weren’t natural? So where had they come from? Was this something to be worried about?

…Still, they had stolen a lot of people’s souls. And as far as Ryner knew, people couldn’t really live without souls, so this was a bad thing. And much as he didn’t like the idea of going out and catching them against their will…

“…Haa, this is such a pain… but there really isn’t another option, is there. Well, as long as they don’t get hurt…”

“Clef?” Ryner looked up to find that Rose had climbed up onto the desk and was looking at him expectantly. He smiled a little and reached out to scritch her ear a little.

“Hey Rose, you feel like going out and saving some souls?”

The Clefairy’s face lit up with delight. Though, this was probably less to do with the prospect of going out and being nice and more to do with the fact that they’d been cooped up for days. Jehra had been adamant about not going outside, and who was Ryner to say no to the instincts of his Absol companion?

Whatever the case, Ryner pulled out his notebook and a pen, and Rose found a position where she could watch him write out his plan without being completely in the way. …Well, it more writing names and circling them or drawing arrows as he spoke, but either way.

“As he said, the Shedinjas have to be caught in order to release the souls they’ve captured. …Well, I’m not quite sure how that works, but that’s the only way we’ve got, so. Probably want to avoid most attacks that would deal damage, since it wouldn’t really be nice to them to just knock them out. I mean, it’s not like they’re out of control or anything… Maybe status effects, like Sleep?”

“Fairy.” Rose nodded in understanding, then picked up a pen of her own and underlined her own, Gail’s, and Kaile’s names on the notebook page, to which Ryner nodded.

“Yeah. You three are the ones who can do that, right? You and Kaile know Sing, and Gail knows Hypnosis. …Ah, I can probably add Aran to that, if he wants to help – he’s got Stun Spore, and Paralysis would probably work.” He underlined Aran’s name, and then Elfy’s. “Can probably get Elfy to help, too, ask him to transform into Gail or something. And of course Jehra will want to come along – he’ll probably feel most comfortable hanging back with me, knowing him.”

He pondered the page for a moment before drawing a couple arrows. “It’d be best if Aran and Kaile rode on Gail and Elfy’s backs, probably, since they aren’t as experienced, and it’d be bad if they got hurt. …Aran with Elfy, I guess, since he’s immune to paralysis, so just in case something went wrong.”

This earned him a stare of disbelief from Rose, to which he responded with a headtilt. “What? I did read up on your abilities a bit, you know. Let’s see… Elfy’s immune to paralysis, Aran heals in the rain but gets hurt in bright sunlight, so he’ll probably do well in this weather, Gail’s accuracy won’t fall, females that hit Kaile fall in love with him, Jehra gets critical strikes more often, and you don’t take damage unless it’s directly from an attack, which I guess is probably why you wouldn’t let me cure the poison you had back then, isn’t it.”

Rose’s response was impressed applause. Ryner was not amused. “Geeze, I have to do something when you won’t let me sleep, you know. And,” he narrowed his eyes a little, “since you guys all seem to want to get stronger, then I guess it’s my responsibility to know what you’re capable of, and what your limits are. I don’t like it when you guys get hurt, you know?”

“Fairy!” Rose seemed to be content with this, considering that she decided to hug his arm happily instead of doing something like throwing the pen at his head. Obviously he’d said something right.

With an expression that was still sleepy as usual but held slightly more determination than he usually allowed, Ryner then stood up from his desk and stretched. “All right, let’s head out and get everyone together. You coming, Jehra?”

The Absol, who had been attempting to sleep on the end of[ Ryner’s bed, looked up, blinked once or twice, and then jumped off the bed to silently stand in front of the door. Not growling the same way as the past couple of days as though to say ‘we are not going outside and that’s final’, but more a warning stare stating ‘you do realize it’s dangerous out there, right?’

Which was expected, really. But Ryner bent down and reached out to give Jehra a comforting pat. “It’ll be all right. Don’t worry, I know to be careful. And you’ll be there to warn me if something’s coming, right?”

“Ab…”

He smiled a little. “I don’t have any intention of getting my soul stolen – you know Rose would kill me if I let that happen. This is just the only way to make sure the danger goes away, okay?”

“…Sol.” With a nod that betrayed lingering worry but trust that his papa would never lie about something this important, Jehra stepped away from the door and took his place right at Ryner’s ankles.

And with Rose having climbed back onto his shoulders and Jehra at his side, Ryner headed out to the Pokémon Center to go get the rest of the team assembled.

[So a certain lazy mage is just outside the Ecruteak Pokémon Center at this point, and boy does he look as though he’s not thrilled by what’s going on.]

Haa… This is going to be really, really bothersome. But if it means that everyone ends up okay in the end, then I guess…

It’s bugging me, a little, the way he'd said that these are different from how Shedinja ‘naturally’ are – makes me wonder what the story is behind these, you know? But, well, everyone needs to be freed somehow, so I guess that doesn’t really matter right now, does it…

Well, anyway, um… If anyone wants to help us catch Shedinjas around Ecruteak, wouldn’t say no to the help, I guess. Not that I’d blame anyone who’d rather stay inside. I’d rather stay inside, this is a huge pain… Haa, but it'd be worse if everyone was stuck like that.

[His eyes narrow slightly as he decides to end his message with one more comment.] If you are going out there, though, no matter where you are… just, be careful, okay?
